In a rather strange quirk of modern tech, navigators who enjoy Apple Maps for finding their way around the world can now enjoy the experience on the best Android phones.
No, Apple hasn’t rocked up on the Google Play store attempting to rival Google Maps. Apple has launched apps like Apple Music and Apple TV on Android in the last few years, but might be reaching a bit when it comes to Maps – despite the app improving dramatically in recent years.
Instead, Apple has brought the experience to mobile web browsers after originally launching Apple Maps on the web for desktop and tablet users as a live public beta. It means both iPhone and Android users can pop along to maps.apple.com on their favourite web browser and navigate the Apple way.
There are some limitations for Android users, as Android Police pointed out in its report today. You’re not able to log into your Apple ID to access saved places, while public transport information is lacking somewhat.
Apple launched Maps on the web in June last year. At the time, the company said: “Now, users can get driving and walking directions; find great places and useful information including photos, hours, ratings, and reviews; take actions like ordering food directly from the Maps place card; and browse curated Guides to discover places to eat, shop, and explore in cities around the world. Additional features, including Look Around, will be available in the coming months.”
Now it’s on Android phones. What a world.
Opinion
Does this matter in the grand scheme of things? No. Is it fun to see more Apple services become available more ubiquitously after years of most things staying in house? Yep!
