Apple’s new F1 movie appears to have been a hit on its opening weekend, with one report claiming that it raked in a cool $145 million already. That’s globally, with the domestic figure coming in at $55.6 million.
The Apple Original Films outfit is no stranger to popular movies, but many of them have been critically acclaimed without being box office smash hits.
That seems to have changed with the release of F1: The Movie, 9to5Mac reports.
The movie’s taking outstrips the rest of Apple’s big releases by some margin, the report notes.
- Killers of the Flower Moon: $44m opening weekend, $158m total
- Napoleon: $78m five-day Thanksgiving opening, $221m total
- Argylle: $35m opening weekend, $96m total
- Fly Me to the Moon: $19m opening weekend, $42m total
The report goes on to note that analysts believe that the worldwide gross box office for the movie could reach $600 million. If it were to pass the $512 million mark, it would outperform the combined takings of all of Apple’s previous theatrical releases.
The movie follows Brad Pitt’s character as he re-enters the world of Formula 1 racing in his twilight, going head-to-head with much younger competitors. Expectations were high for the movie, and Apple will no doubt be relieved that it appears to be living up to those expectations.
