Cevaton S6 15.6″ Laptop Screen Extender Review

Cevaton S6 15.6″ Laptop Screen Extender Review

I travel often. And sometimes, I travel for long enough periods of time that I absolutely need more than just my laptop screen. The Cevaton S6 15.6″ Laptop Screen Extender fits that need really well. When I go on a two-week working vacation, the Cevaton S6 is portable enough to come along with me and help me keep a somewhat productive workflow throughout my time away from my main PC setup.

Estimated reading time: 13 minutes

This handy, not very little, but portable unit was a decent alternative to the other dual-displays which hook on to your laptops display. Cevaton S6 bills this product as a triple screen extender. That name is a bit confusing as there are only two displays in the box. These are two 15.6″ LCDs that allow you to have three displays at once, including your laptop display. So let’s get into the full review of the Cevaton S6 15.6″ Laptop Screen Extender (which I will refer to as the Cevaton S6 throughout this review.)

The Quick Take

Cevaton S6

Anyone who is away from their main work rig probably misses their setup when gone. I know I do. I have a hard time using a 16″ or 15″ laptop for more than a few days. I am used to a 57″ wide screen display at home. So, the Cevaton S6 is certainly something that was a lifesaver for me. There are a few things I really loved and a few things I really hated. Here’s the quick take of my likes and dislikes.

  • What I liked:
    • Simple to use and setup
    • Nice design, I love that these do not clip on the laptop
    • I love that these are 15.6″, essentially adding two laptop displays to your laptop
    • Full-HD displays are nice and everything looks crisp and clear with good color
    • All the cables you need to make it work are included
  • What I didn’t like:
    • The brightness could be better, at 300 lux, these could stand a boost in brightness.
    • Connecting this does require at least two full feature USB-C ports or 1 USB-A, 1 USB-C (full feature), and 1 HDMI port. Some laptops may not have these, so check yours.

I liked the Cevaton S6, it really has helped me get more done while on vacation. My only major gripe is the brightness. Let’s get these panels up to 500 nits, and then we’re in business. Otherwise, these are decent for the price.

Design/Setup

Cevaton S6

The Cevaton S6 design is actually really great. The build quality is impressive and the materials used are high-grade. The whole package comes with a very nice carry bag that you can slip the whole thing into. The bag is made of a faux leather and when you take the unit apart, it just slips right into the bag and the cables can go into a pouch at the front.

The two displays should be stored with the panels facing each other, and they connect with magnets. This is a nice touch, it helps to keep the displays protected even more. And it keeps them from being touched by the other parts of the set-up.

The backs of the displays have a carbon fiber design, I don’t think they’re carbon fiber, they’re just made to look like it. The stand also has this design cue. Otherwise, most of the Cevaton S6 is made up of aluminum and high-quality plastics.

Cevaton does have a warning label on each display that cautions you to not put pressure on the displays when installing on the arms. If you push on the display panel, you could crack it, so remember they are fragile. They are also incredibly thin, which adds to the fragility.

The stand can be spread out to accommodate up to a 17″ laptop, depending on model. The arms flip out and there are mounting points on the back of each display that slide into them. You can also rotate the displays from landscape to portrait if that’s what you need. I used them in landscape the entire time, I never used a portrait orientation. But for users of spreadsheets and docs, I’d imagine that would be useful.

Each display has a series of ports at the back and a power button on each. So the ports on your laptop might be taken up by using the Cevaton S6, but you do get USB-C ports that you can use. There are two USB-C ports and an HDMI port on the back of each panel.

There are also speakers on the Cevaton S6, I did test these, but I chose to use the speakers on my ASUS Zephyrus G16. More on the sound and speakers later.

The build quality and sturdiness of the Cevaton S6 is pretty good. I feel like this will hold up over time, but if you’re a heavy user, I mean a daily user moving it constantly, it may develop some wear. I don’t know for sure, this is just my gut feeling.

Setting up the Cevaton S6 is straightforward. Simply unpack it, unfold the arms, slide in the displays (they are marked LEFT and RIGHT on the display and stand), connect to your laptop, adjust the displays to your liking, and remove the protective film from the front of the displays. My Zephyrus G16 recognized the displays right away, and it was just a matter of jumping into Windows Display Settings to arrange them and make minor adjustments.

Overall, the design of the Cevaton S6 is very nice for an unknown brand, and the setup experience was simple. One note, some Apple laptops may not be compatible, please check the listing on Amazon and make sure yours will work with this setup.

Display

Cevaton S6 3

The Cevaton S6 is essentially two identical 15.6″ FHD displays which flank your laptops display. If your laptop display is an IPS display and FHD, you probably won’t notice a huge difference between these panels and your laptops. But since my Zephyrus G16 houses a 16″ OLED panel with excellent brightness, it is noticeable how different the Cevaton S6 panels are in comparison.

That doesn’t make these panels bad, but it’s worth noting that if your laptop display is outstanding, these might look a little drab next to it. The Zephyrus G16 OLED is so much brighter that I ended up lowering the brightness to compensate for the dimmer Cevaton S6, and that really helped to give me a more even viewing experience.

The brightness is an issue for me, I really prefer bright 500 nits or better panels. But the other bits of the Cevaton S6 displays are really great. Obviously, they gave me two more displays to have more content on. One display holds all of my social media tabs, the other holds my email. My laptop display is used for writing and editing and working through my content.

Cevaton S6 6

I never intended to use the Cevaton S6 displays for anything other than socials, email, web browsing, and YouTube. All the heavy lifting and work was done by my laptop display. But, that said, Cevaton does bill these as having excellent sRGB color gamut and 1000:1 contrast ratio. So I supposed you could do video and photo editing on these. I did some minor photo editing in Affinity with one of the panels and it was fine.

The blacks are pretty good, not deep and inky, but good for this price point. The whites are actually clean, and the text is crisp to read. The only real issue I had with these displays was the brightness, if only these had 500 nits of brightness, they would have a much higher score.

Overall, the Cevaton S6 displays aren’t perfect. But for me, for my use case, they were good. I would only use these about four weeks out of the year, so they don’t have to be perfect. I would say, if your intention is to use these daily, and you value brightness, then this may not be for you. But for most users, I think you’ll love them.

Performance

Cevaton S6 4

I already went over most of what the Cevaton S6 has to offer in terms of performance, so I will keep this section short.

Repeating myself, the only big performance issue I had been the brightness level. There were other smaller performance issues that were more of a nuisance than anything. For example, getting the angle of the stand just right and adjusting the monitors to a comfortable angle took some time. That doesn’t really affect performance, so it’s not a huge deal.

Overall, the performance of the Cevaton S6 is pretty good, not excellent, but I believe good enough to make your life easier when traveling.

Speakers/Sound

The Cevaton S6 includes speakers, which would work in a pinch but aren’t exactly amazing. These speakers are pretty thin, but certainly better than some laptop speakers. The speakers on the Zephyrus G16 are MacBook Pro level, so I only used the speakers on the Cevaton S6 for a few quick tests.

Basically, the speakers are thin, but they will work if needed. My recommendation is to just use your laptop speakers. Windows will auto-switch the speaker input to the S6, so you’ll have to jump into Windows Sound Settings to switch it back.

Overall, the speakers and sound are fine, but your laptop speakers are likely better.

Price/Value

The manufacturer’s suggested retail price of the Cevaton S6 is pretty high, but you can find it currently on sale at Amazon. The sale price makes sense, and I’d say you get the value from these at that price (see pricing below). If you’re looking for a setup like the Cevaton S6, it’s really a decent choice if you’re using these every so often. I probably wouldn’t pick the S6 to use daily.

Wrap Up

The Cevaton S6 isn’t perfect by any means. It’s biggest pain point, for me, is the brightness level. These panels could use at least another 100 nits of brightness. But, even as they sit, I found the S6 to be a very handy device and very useable in normally lit rooms and indoors. It does struggle outdoors in bright sunlight. But when I am on vacation and working, I generally find a nice nook where I can concentrate, and the Cevaton S6 really helped me to have a more familiar workflow. I hope the company comes back to the table with a new model with more brightness. That would make a huge difference.
