I’m as tired of writing about Elon Musk as I’m sure you are of reading about him, but one thing I will never get tired of is reading about how much people don’t like him.
And oh boy, people really don’t like him. Even those in the Trump administration aren’t fans.
Senior Trump officials spoke anonymously with Rolling Stone about Musk, much of it complaints about, well, everything. They said he was “crazy,” “not funny,” “annoying,” “irritating,” and more.
Some officials in the State Department reportedly call Musk “Crazy Uncle Elon,” according to sources who spoke to Rolling Stone. Others told the magazine that high-ranking administration officials “walked out of meetings and earnestly asked one another if they thought Musk was high” and joked about subjecting Musk to mandatory drug testing. (Rolling Stone points out that Musk’s lawyer claims he’s “regularly and randomly drug-tested at SpaceX” and has never failed a test.)
Some other choice quotes include:
“I have been in the same room with Elon, and he always tries to be funny. And he’s not funny. Like, at all,” says a senior Trump administration official. “He makes these jokes and little asides and smiles and then looks almost hurt if you don’t lap up his humor. I keep using the word ‘annoying’; a lot of people who have to deal with him do. But the word doesn’t do the situation justice. Elon just thinks he’s smarter than everyone else in the room and acts like it, even when it’s clear he doesn’t know what he’s talking about.”
And:
“Talking to the guy is sometimes like listening to really rusty nails on a chalkboard,” says the senior Trump administration official, who adds that Musk is not much of a team player, either. “He’s just the most irritating person I’ve ever had to deal with, and that is saying something.”
So yeah, it’s really incredible stuff. None of this is even a little surprising, especially if you’ve loosely followed Musk-related news over the last few years. We’ve seen Musk use the social network he bought to pump his own engagement numbers, only to later sell it to one of his other companies at a loss after his terrible decisions tanked the value.
Musk has also tried to convince the world that he’s an elite gamer despite all of the evidence to the contrary. He proudly boasted of an Elden Ring build that was unquestionably bad. Musk showed up at a Cyberpunk 2077 recording session and begged to be added to the game while brandishing a gun. He dubiously claimed he was among the top 20 Diablo IV players in the world. Musk’s daughter said he was “dogshit” at Overwatch.
More recently, Musk suggested he was so good at Path of Exile 2 that he got temporarily banned for clicking too many buttons. He later hopped into a livestream to show off his gaming prowess, resulting in the game’s community roasting him for obviously not knowing how to play the game. Musk later admitted to account sharing.
And if that wasn’t bad enough, Musk streamed himself playing Path of Exile 2 again this week. This time around, he died to the tutorial boss while people in chat relentlessly bullied him.
I’d feel bad for the guy if he weren’t a billionaire working tirelessly to destroy the U.S. government by firing tens of thousands of workers, cancelling life-saving aid, and attacking social security programs. Musk is causing real damage and harm to real people while he and his billionaire buddies reap the profits. It’s hardly a surprise people are starting to fight back.
