Freedom Mobile is deploying the 3,800MHz spectrum across its 5G+ network in Ontario, Alberta, and British Columbia. Freedom says this will upgrade its network significantly, theoretically allowing peak download speeds of 1Gbps, resulting in a better experience.
The deployment will hit existing 5G+ coverage zones, including the GTA, Burlington, Oakville, Milton, and Hamilton, as well as key areas in Alberta, including urban areas of Edmonton and Calgary, the Edmonton International Airport (Leduc), the West Edmonton Mall, and communities in St. Albert. Additionally, areas in British Columbia will also see the 3,800MHz spectrum, such as areas throughout Vancouver, Burnaby, Surrey and Delta, and more sites are planned for activation in the coming months.
To access the 3,800MHz spectrum, you’ll need a 5G+ plan and a compatible device, including the iPhone 16 family and Motorola Razr+. Devices that will soon get access to the 3,800MHz spectrum include the Galaxy S24 series, Z Fold 6, Z Flip, and Google’s Pixel 9 series.
Freedom Mobile already has the 3,500MHz spectrum, a complementary mid-band spectrum to the 3,800MHz spectrum.
Quebecor bought a large chunk of the 3,500MHz spectrum in 2021 when it was eyeing a larger expansion. Then, at the end of November 2024, the telecom bought its chunk of 3,800MHz for $299 million.
However, this isn’t the first mention of Freedom Mobile’s 3,800MHz spectrum. In November, the company announced it was turning on 180 new 5G sites and leveraging 3,500MHz and 3,800MHz spectrum to increase speeds. Additionally, Freedom Mobile launched new, pricier plans in January, which were confirmed to use the 3,800MHz spectrum.
Other carriers that offer 3800MHz include Bell, Telus and Rogers.
