HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 2-in-1 Review

HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 2-in-1 Review

Laptop review units have been coming at me hot and heavy for almost a year now. With Intel Lunar and Arrow Lake being released, there’s a lot to look at. The HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 2-in-1 showed up a few months ago, but a BIOS update took it out of my queue for review. I had to send it back to HP for them to take a look at. Now, the HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 2-in-1 is back, and I’ve had some actual time with it, aside from my initial unboxing.

Estimated reading time: 12 minutes

The HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 2-in-1 Intel Lunar Lake laptop is one of the nicest built 2-in-1’s with amazing features and Lunar Lake performance. The Intel Lunar Lake platform was announced last year, and the HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 2-in-1 was one of the first to get this chip. Since then, we’ve had Intel Arrow Lake announced, and both Lunar and Arrow have shown a lot of promise in performance. Let’s jump into the full review of this small yet mighty laptop!

The Quick Take

I’m usually not a fan of laptops under 15″, mostly due to the fact I like big displays. But I was very surprised by the HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 2-in-1. I think what really got me to overlook the smaller 14″ display was the keyboard, haptic trackpad, and the display itself. Not to mention the excellent performance of the Intel Lunar Lake processor sitting inside the guts of this little guy. But all of this does come at a cost, which you may be ok with or not. Here’s where I think the HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 2-in-1 NAILED IT and where it NEEDS WORK.

Overall, this is an excellent laptop. Yes, the MSRP is steep. Especially for this configuration I have here. But you can find these on sale for a reasonable price, and at the sale prices, the HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 2-in-1 is a really solid value.

From its comfortable and easy to use keyboard and haptic trackpad, to the outstanding speakers and brilliant OLED display.

I wouldn’t recommend this laptop for hardcore gaming or programming, but I think light gaming, video editing, and photo editing are very doable with ease on the HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 2-in-1. It will certainly fit the bill for basic computing tasks and day to day use.

Design

HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 2-in-1 8

The HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 2-in-1 comes in two very nice colors, the one I have with me is Eclipse Gray. But the company also offers a dark blue version named, Atmospheric Blue. The first thing you’ll notice is, yes, fingerprints will be an issue. Especially if you’ve just had a slice of pizza or something similar. They are easily cleaned off, but fingerprints will show.

The entire laptop is made of premium aluminum and the build quality is fantastic. Everything just feels very tight and well-built without any creaks or rattles or cheap materials. The hinges are fairly taught, which is good for a 2-in-1 because this keeps the display at whatever angle you put it at.

It is possible to open the lid with one finger, but it’s not easy. There is very little front lip to help lift, and I just used two hands to open it. I can look past this because the hinges on a 2-in-1 should be a little more resistant and that will affect one hand opening.

HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 2-in-1 7

The bottom of the laptop is uneventful, a long vent for cooling and the rubber feet to hold the laptop on the surface. The back edge of the laptop has more venting for cooling, and one of the hinges is branded with the OmniBook brand.

The left edge of the HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 2-in-1 houses one USB-C Thunderbolt 4 port, the headphone jack and HP’s poly studio branding. The right edge of the laptop houses the other two USB-C Thunderbolt 4 ports. It is worth noting that, two of the USB-C ports are placed on the angled edges of the laptop. Which I think is a pretty awesome design cue.

The top of the HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 2-in-1 is simple, with only the HP logo. Opening the laptop up, revels the 14″ OLED display with HP branding at the bottom of it. It also exposes the very nice backlit keyboard and the outstanding haptic trackpad. Yes, haptic. That’s just spectacular. The keyboard is very nice to use, with good key travel and a good feel. The haptic trackpad is fabulous, and every laptop needs one.

HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 2-in-1 6

There is OmniBook Ultra branding along with AI branding on the deck and of course, the Intel Core Ultra 7 sticker, proving you have a Lunar Lake laptop. One cool design note, the power button is on the top right of the keyboard, and it is colored blue, it also doubles as a fingerprint scanner.

Overall, the design and build quality of the HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 2-in-1 is top-notch. It’s one of the better looking and built Windows laptops in this size. Right up there with the MacBook 14.

Display

HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 2-in-1 14

The 14″ diagonal, 3K (2880 x 1800), OLED, multitouch-enabled, 48-120 Hz display on the HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 2-in-1 is one of the best I’ve seen. I love OLED displays on laptops, they are my preferred panel. Not that IPS displays can’t be good, I just prefer OLED and this one is fantastic.

It is a touch display, and it is glossy, so there is some glare and some off axis viewing can be difficult. But only for someone looking at it, not from the user’s direct perspective. I’m not usually a fan of displays under 15″ because I prefer larger displays. But I was okay with this 14″ display, the 16:10 aspect ratio is great, and it felt comfortable to use. If I am honest, I would have preferred a 15″ but I was okay with this.

The touch display works perfectly fine, and you can order an HP Pen to go along with the HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 2-in-1, mine did not have one. As with all 2-in-1 laptops, you can use this as a laptop, tablet, tent mode, or entertainment mode configurations. There are many ways to use this display.

The colors are bright and vibrant, with blacks being dark and deep, the whites are clean and crisp with text looking nice and sharp. The panel is also very bright, and I had no issues with brightness at all, it’s very nice.

Overall, the display on this laptop is one of the best 14″ displays I’ve used. It helps that it is OLED, and it is very bright, and the 2-in-1 feature is a bonus.

Software

The HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 2-in-1 comes with Windows 11 installed and with a few HP pieces of software, like Poly Studio and Sound. Not much to say about Windows, it’s great and works well here. The other software is also good, should you choose to use it. Overall, the software experience is what you would expect from a Windows laptop. Not much new happening here.

Intel Lunar Lake Performance

So, I am a little late to the game on this one. We had some logistical issues with this laptop and this review is showing up late. So I am not going to go too in depth with benchmarks and whatnot, considering the information is mostly well known and out there.

What I will say about performance on the HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 2-in-1 is this, it’s excellent. Daily tasks and even some light photo editing were no issue here, and battery life is excellent. More on that below.

I had no issues running my day-to-day tasks and using this laptop as I would any laptop I normally use. The only thing I didn’t do was video editing in DaVinci Resolve. But I am confident that the Intel Lunar Lake platform, paired with its integrated graphics, could handle light video editing with ease.

Overall, I was satisfied with the performance of the HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 2-in-1 and I think it offers superior performance for as small a package it is in.

Camera

The camera on the HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 2-in-1 is a 9MP IR camera that you can use to log in with Windows Hello, which works perfectly. The laptop also comes with HP’s Poly Studio software, which does all the blurred background and green screen effects for when you’re doing video calls. The Poly Studio software is actually really nice and works really well.

The camera quality is above average here, and this camera is actually not bad at all. It’s a step up from some of the cameras I’ve seen on other Windows laptops, and I have to give HP credit with this one. The microphones are also excellent and they sound excellent.

There is a camera shutter for privacy, and that is just a slider at the top of the laptop. This is a must so you can keep the camera covered when not using it. Overall, the camera is fantastic and so are the mics.

Battery Life

Battery life is a big selling point for the HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 2-in-1. With the new Intel Lunar Lake chipset and Intel graphics. I was able to get over 15 hours of battery life with just general use. That’s web browsing, email, writing, word processing, light photo editing, YouTube, messaging, and just day-to-day tasks that most people do on the regular.

I didn’t stress the battery much with any video or heavy photo editing, but I feel like I could probably still get 8–10 hours even with throwing something heavier at it. I wouldn’t say this laptop is good for video or photo editors or heavy programmers. Maybe it could handle all of that, but I feel this is more geared to the regular user who wants an excellent day of battery.

Speakers/Audio

The speakers are another bright spot on the HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 2-in-1. They sound fantastic, and I would even compare them to something like the MacBook 14″ laptop. This laptop features HP’s Poly Sound, and I was very impressed with what these speakers were doing. Usually, Windows laptop speakers are weak, but these are superb.

Price/Value

The price of the HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 2-in-1 is a little high, but I feel it is justified given the build quality and specs of this laptop. Still, some may find it to be a bit too pricey. There is hope though because the sale prices, when they have them, on this laptop are generally excellent. So if you can find this laptop on sale, it is well worth your time to consider it.

Wrap Up
