Samsung M9 M90SF 4K OLED Monitor Review

Samsung M9 M90SF 4K OLED Monitor Review

It has been a whirlwind of monitor reviews for me this year, which has truly disrupted my desk and workflow having to swap out monitors, but I digress. The Samsung M9 M90SF 4K OLED was the last monitor in this army of monitors I’ve reviewed, and it’s by far, in my top two favorite monitors for 2025. This monitor has nearly everything you’ll ever need, especially when it comes to entertainment options. Samsung has made some major improvements in this model, especially making it a QD-OLED display. Whoa, momma!

Estimated reading time: 13 minutes

The Samsung M9 M90SF has a little something for everyone, but it really is perfect for those users who need a monitor and a TV but don’t want to spend on both. Because this baby has Smart TV functionality as well as Gaming Hub, you can do your 9 to 5 work and at the end of the day, switch to your entertainment. It really is a complete package and this time, Samsung did it right. Let’s get into the review.

The Quick Take

When Samsung introduced their Smart Monitor lineup a few years ago, not everyone really took to the idea. But as always, Samsung stuck with the idea and kept refining and trimming and molding. I think the Samsung M9 M90SF is the closest the company has come to what its intentions are for this monitor family. With a brilliant 4K QD-OLED display, 165Hz refresh rate, Smart TV apps, Gaming Hub, and more. This is a do-it-all monitor and TV, perfect for work and play.

9.5/10

Nailed it

  • Sleek and angular design new stand looks great
  • Easy to setup and stand is easy to put together
  • The 4K OD-OLED display is FIRE!
  • Great performance with excellent refresh rate and response time
  • Speakers and webcam are next level for a monitor

Needs work

  • Very expensive
  • Bigger size option would be nice to see, maybe a 42″ or 45″

The best thing about the Samsung M9 M90SF, and not everyone is going to fall into this use case, is the ability to use ONE device for work and entertainment. Most monitors aren’t TVs, and TVs are difficult to use as a monitor. This gives you the best of both worlds.

The 4K QD-OLED panel on the Samsung M9 M90SF is fantabulous! With VESA DisplayHDR True Black 400, you’re getting the deepest black levels you can get on a monitor. The new Dynamic Cooling System works well to cool the monitor with a new Pulsating Heat Pipe.

Samsung has even taken measures to help with OLED burn-in by implementing logo and taskbar detection. This reduces the brightness of logos and lower-third areas, so the screen won’t burn in as quickly. Samsung also dims the screen after 10-minutes of inactivity to help with this.

While this isn’t a gaming monitor, you certainly can game on it with its 165Hz refresh rate, 0.03ms response time and Gaming Hub included. You also get Samsung TV Plus and access to all of your streaming apps in TV mode. There’s also Samsung Vision AI and AI upscaling, all the normal Samsung AI tricks and features are here.

Not to mention the design is killer and the new stand looks outstanding. You also get decent connectivity. Overall, this is really an outstanding monitor for work and play and for those who only want to spend once, this is a solid choice.

Design

The Samsung M9 M90SF is a departure from some of the company’s other monitors, and that’s a good thing. It has an angular and square look, which looks modern and stylish to me. The first thing I noticed was the stand and how that was put together, more on that in the next section.

The rear of the monitor looks super clean with the I/O nestled behind the stand, but it is very accessible. There is a cutout on the stand that allows you to keep your cables from hanging all over the place. The Samsung logo is neatly placed on the back in an elegant and tasteful way.

The stand consists of a square foot and square arm that mounts on the back of the Samsung M9 M90SF, yes you can wall mount or use a mounting arm. The I/O is centered and consists of the following:

  • Two USB Type-A Downstream
  • One HDMI
  • One DisplayPort
  • One USB Type-C Upstream
  • Power Input
  • Power Button

The front of the Samsung M9 M90SF is just the screen along with the webcam, and the top and bottom house venting and speakers. The overall package with the stand is not super heavy at under 20-pounds, though it is heavier than some other monitors.

You also get fairly nice pivot and tilt adjustments on this monitor, and the bezels are pretty thin and make the display pop nicely. Overall, the design looks outstanding. It’s clean, minimal, and great to look at.

Setup/Assembly

The Samsung M9 M90SF is super simple to set up, and the way the stand is put together is pretty interesting. Usually, the way monitor stands are assembled is, you put the foot on the arm and use the captured screw to tighten it down.

Not so with this monitor. On the M9, you just slip the foot on the arm, and it clicks together with a hard plastic fastener, and then you slide the arm into the back of the monitor as usual. Taking the foot off involves pushing a hard plastic tab to release the lock. It’s simple and pretty awesome.

Once you have the hardware set up, you can power the Samsung M9 M90SF up and set up the TV interface. This works just like any other Samsung TV, sign in to your Samsung account and set up your apps and logins from there.

You can switch between your PC and the TV interface using the included solar remote, which is outstanding, and choosing your input. The monitor will understand what input you are using and it will adjust accordingly.

Overall, the setup and assembly of the Samsung M9 M90SF is straightforward, and the software interface is simple to get going.

Display

Samsung M9 M90SF 4K OLED review

Samsung brought the game with this year’s Smart Monitor by using a QD-OLED 4K display with VESA DisplayHDR True Black 400 and a 165Hz refresh rate. This thing looks spectacular.

The colors just pop off the Samsung M9 M90SF and thanks to that Quantum Dot back lighting, we get some really amazing brightness that doesn’t wash out the colors. The matte display is great for off angle viewing, with very little glare on the panel.

While this is not a gaming monitor, it does have a 165Hz refresh rate with a 0.03ms response time, so it does do very well for gaming. Samsung Vision AI software does its AI magic to improve picture quality and also does AI upscaling.

The whites are clean and vibrant, with the text looking crisp and legible. The 32″ size allows for two windows side by side, and they fit comfortably. So there’s the productivity aspect of this monitor.

With VESA DisplayHDR True Black 400 technology, you get better blacks, but also your gray areas do not get blown away. So you can see more of the scene and not lose it to the black levels.

Overall, the Samsung M9 M90SF QD-OLED display is one of the best you’re going to find on ANY monitor. This thing is fire and can handle everything from productivity and content creation, to gaming and entertainment.

Performance

Samsung M9 M90SF 4K OLED review

The performance of the Samsung M9 M90SF is outstanding. I will say, the power supply of this monitor is a big boy and because it does everything it does, it has the potential to get hot. But Samsung has come up with a solution, and one that does work well.

The Dynamic Cooling System is built into the monitor on the back panel. This system is a “Pulsating Heat Pipe” that releases a coolant that Samsung says can diffuse heat five times faster than graphite sheet. This reduces core temperature and prevents burn-in.

The company also has a Thermal Modulation System built-in that uses algorithms to auto control, brightness and prevent overheating. Another new performance feature is the Logo and Task Bar Detection feature. The software auto-detects any logos or taskbars (or lower-thirds) and dims the areas where those static images are. This helps to reduce burn-in, as many games have HUD’s and other overlays that are static and can cause the dreaded burn-in.

Screen Saver is also a feature on the Samsung M9 M90SF, and this simply dims the screen after 10 minutes of inactivity and comes back to regular brightness with any input. Of course, there is the already mentioned 165Hz refresh rate and 0.03ms response time, that is excellent for gamers.

Samsung Vision AI helps to adjust your picture and audio to make for a better experience. I tried this, it seems to work, but your results may vary. Samsung Vision AI also keeps track of what you’re viewing and makes recommendations for programs based on your history. This can all be turned off in the settings if you wish.

Overall, I don’t do a lot of gaming, so I can’t speak to performance on that front. But I did use the Samsung M9 M90SF for entertainment and productivity and this thing is a champ and handled my workloads with no issues. It never even got hot.

Sound/Speakers/Webcam

Samsung M9 M90SF 4K OLED review

Given that the Samsung M9 M90SF aims to be a device that can do multiple things really well, Samsung had to bring the performance of its speakers and webcam. I will say this, to preface. There is no monitor that is going to give you desktop reference speaker performance. That said, the speakers on the Samsung M9 M90SF are so good, better than I expected.

Usually, speakers on monitors are very thin and lack any depth, but the speakers on the M9 actually have some depth to them. They work very well for conferencing and voice content, like podcasts and news programs. The voices are well-balanced and crystal clear, and there are no issues at all.

For movies and gaming, these speakers perform admirable. The bottom end is still not as good as I would like for entertainment purposes, but holy cow. These are better than the normal speakers of most other monitors. They deliver good bottom end with some good spacial soundstaging. It’s not perfect, by any means, but given that this is a monitor, they are excellent for a monitor.

The Samsung M9 M90SF also houses an amazing 4K webcam and microphone array that is spectacular. This makes video conferencing a breeze. The camera is superb, the best I’ve seen on any monitor. I don’t do a lot of video calling, but if that’s something you do frequently, this webcam is going to make you happy.

Overall, the sound, speakers, microphones, and webcam on the Samsung M9 M90SF are better than they should be. This is a highlight of this monitor.

Price/Value

Priced at sixteen-hundred dollars, the Samsung M9 M90SF isn’t cheap. But you’re getting two experiences in one, and I could argue three with the gaming aspect. I would like to see this monitor in a larger size, like a 42″. I think that would make it more worthwhile as a TV. But, as it sits, I think there is tremendous value here considering all that the Samsung M9 M90SF can do. Totally worth it.
