Samsung Odyssey 3D G90XF Review: Mind-blowing 3D Experience

Samsung Odyssey 3D G90XF Review: Mind-blowing 3D Experience

Last year, I was part of a press trip to South Korea, where we were allowed to see many of the display and home theater products announced at CES 2025. One of those devices was the Samsung Odyssey 3D G90XF, and I have had to hold my tongue about this monitor since the day I first laid eyes on it. I am good at respecting and holding embargoes, but not being able to discuss the Odyssey 3D G90XF was a hard one. But I did manage to keep the information under wraps. But now, now is the day I can finally spill the beans and explain to you why my mind was blown so many months ago.

Estimated reading time: 16 minutes

This review isn’t going to do the Samsung Odyssey 3D G90XF justice, not even a video would do this monitor justice. The Samsung Odyssey 3D G90XF is simply a device you have to see in person to really appreciate what is happening. However, it’s also not a device for everyone, this has a limited audience. Please read this review to the end and then do yourself a favor and find somewhere to see this monitor in person and take it in for yourself. Let’s get into the review.

The Quick Take

The Samsung Odyssey 3D G90XF is a mind-blowing experience that you have to see to believe. I really enjoyed using this monitor to play games, watch YouTube videos, and movies all in 3D. The 3D effect doesn’t work on every piece of content, but the system recognizes when it can, and it will prompt you. This monitor is fantastic, but it is still new tech and probably not for everyone. Early adopters will be thrilled by this monitor and if you have the cash, it is worth it.

9.0/10

Nailed it

  • Nice clean design
  • Nice display with good colors and decent blacks
  • Performs well as a 2D and 3D monitor
  • 3D Experience is wild and fun
  • Very nice sound and spatial audio features
  • Good I/O selection and good adjustability

Needs work

  • Very expensive
  • Game support is limited right now
  • 3D will require a good gaming rig with power
  • 2D off angle viewing could be better

The Samsung Odyssey 3D G90XF is, I believe, is a niche product, but there is certainly a market there; otherwise Samsung wouldn’t have made it. I think early adopters who love new tech will buy this. It’s for this reason, we’ve awarded this monitor with our first-ever Techaeris Innovation Award.

The 3D experience was fantastic, when using it with compatible content. Not all content will be compatible, but the software will recognize what is and prompt you to activate 3D mode, should you wish. The monitor bits are pretty solid, colors are nice, blacks are good, whites are clean, and the display is plenty bright. Off angle viewing is a little difficult because of whatever coating is on the Samsung Odyssey 3D G90XF, but most people will be viewing this head-on.

One other thing to consider is how the 3D effect will physically make you feel. I had no issues playing games in 3D, watching YouTube content in 3D and movies in 3D. But a few of my kids, and my wife, did not take to this experience. They felt that it disoriented them when viewing. This will not be the case for everyone, but some people may indeed feel this effect. Overall, if you’ve been wanting a 3D monitor without the glasses, this Samsung Odyssey 3D G90XF is the real deal, and it will only get better as time goes on.

Design

Samsung Odyssey 3D G90XF display 4

The Samsung Odyssey 3D G90XF design is pretty minimal and sticks to the Odyssey line of Samsung monitor looks. The overall construction is solid, with high quality plastics being the primary material used throughout. The overall weight is manageable and is on par with other monitors of this size. The dimensions are equally the same to other 27″ monitors as well.

The back of the Samsung Odyssey 3D G90XF is fairly plain, with a long venting port along the top, the stand mounting point, a small Odyssey logo, and a bank of I/O on the bottom. Here’s what that consists of:

  • Display Port, Display Port Version 1.4, HDCP Version (DP) 2.2
  • HDMI x2, HDMI Version 2.1, HDCP Version (HDMI) 2.2
  • USB Ports x2, USB Hub Version 3.1 Gen1
  • USB-B Upstream Port 1
  • DC In
  • Power/multifunction/joystick button

The top and sides don’t have much going on, and the bottom houses more venting and the Samsung logo quietly placed in the center. The front, is of course, the display, more on that next. The pedestal stand is nice and sturdy and has a nice wide foot. There is a passthrough for cable management and the stand does articulate up, down, and tilts.

Overall, the Odyssey 3D G90XF sticks to the Odyssey design language, which is already great looking as it is. Maybe, one could argue for some sort of differentiator to make this a bit more special due to its 3D capability. But I think it looks great, it’s simple and looks great on the desk in its silver color.

Display

Samsung Odyssey 3D G90XF display 2

The Samsung Odyssey 3D G90XF sports a 165Hz, 4K, HDR display that looks spectacular when viewing it directly. Samsung makes the best displays in the business, and it shows in even the competition products. I’m going to cover only the display as a normal display here, and I’ll get into the 3D and performance in the next two sections. Here are the specs of this display:

  • Screen Size (Class) 27″
  • Flat / Curved Flat
  • Active Display Size (HxV) (mm) 596.736 x 335.664 mm / 23.5 x 13.2 in.
  • Aspect Ratio 16:9
  • Panel Type IPS
  • Brightness (Typical) 350 cd/m2
  • Brightness (Min) 280 cd/m2
  • Contrast Ratio (Static) 1000:1

  • HDR10+ HDR10+ Gaming
  • Resolution 4K (3,840 x 2,160)

  • Viewing Angle (H/V) 178Ëš/178Ëš

  • Color Gamut (sRGB Coverage) 99% (CIE1931)
  • Frame Rate Max 165Hz
Samsung Odyssey 3D G90XF display

This is an IPS panel, not an OLED, so be aware of that. I say this because of how excellent Samsung OLED gaming monitors are, and if you were expecting OLED, it is not here. I suspect that the 3D aspect of this monitor has something to do with having an IPS panel, but not totally positive.

Still, this IPS display has pretty nice HDR colors, the whites are clean and text is crisp. The black levels aren’t as good as I’d like, but again, I think the 3D technology might have something to do with this. I’m sure these panels will improve over time.

The 165Hz refresh rate provides great response for gaming and for other content that has fast-moving pixels. The brightness of this panel is fairly average, it’s not super bright, but also not too dim. I always like more brightness, so I’d love more, but it was sufficient for most all scenarios. Viewing angles are just okay, they could be better, but again, I think the 3D tech and panel used for that tech have a lot to do with this. Besides, if you’re using the 3D option, it’s better viewed directly.

Overall, as a regular monitor for daily use and for gaming. The Samsung Odyssey 3D G90XF is great. Its party trick is where the action in, and we’ll get into that next.

Performance and Setup

Samsung Odyssey 3D G90XF back

We can’t talk about the performance of the Samsung Odyssey 3D G90XF without talking about the hardware it takes to run the monitor. You might want to check your system specifications before diving in and buying this straight away.

In order for the Odyssey 3D G90XF to work properly, your system should have the following minimal specifications, or higher.

  • CPU:
  • Intel i7 or higher
  • AMD Ryzen 7 1700X or higher
  • GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3080 or higher
  • RAM: DDR5-5600 32GB 2 each or better
  • Required Software: Samsung Reality Hub

My rig is a Legion 9i Tower with an Intel i9-14900KF, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 Super, and 32GB DDR-5-5600. The monitor won’t work without downloading and installing the Samsung Reality Hub software, but before you do that, you should make sure your Windows and NVIDIA drivers are all up to date. Once that’s done, then you can download Reality Hub and install it. Reboot your computer before running the software.

To activate 3D conversion, Reality Hub must be running on your system and video must be in full screen. The resolution must be set to 3840 x 2160 and HDR mode should be off in Windows settings and for the best latency, change DisplayPort Version to 1.4 and Input Port Version to 2.0 in the menu. You should also be sure to use the USB cable that Samsung provides in the box.

As a regular monitor, the Samsung Odyssey 3D G90XF performs fantastically! As a 3D monitor, it’s mind-blowing and a real treat. I remember, as a kid, watching 3D movies with the 3D glasses. I thought that was pretty spectacular, but this really blows that out of the water. Overall, the performance is excellent and this is a solid gaming monitor in both regular mode and 3D mode.

Software 3D Experience

Samsung Odyssey 3D G90XF dimensions

Now we come to it. The Samsung Odyssey 3D G90XF runs a new software called, Reality Hub. This is where compatible content can be accessed. And that’s the kicker, not all content is compatible and there are only a handful of games that are certified compatible with the 3D experience. Here are a few of the games that are currently compatible.

  • Dragonball Z:Kakarot
  • Little Nightmares II
  • PALWORLD
  • F.I.S.T
  • SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake
  • Like a Dargon: Ishin
  • Only UP
  • Darksiders Genesis
  • Octopath Traveler
  • Lies of P

All of these games are accessed through Steam. I did try to play a few titles on Xbox PC Gaming, mostly Sniper Elite: Resistance, and it was very choppy and laggy. The 3D effect did work, but the game was not playable. This was not unexpected, as I stated, not all games will work.

Some games, like Sniper Elite, showed the 3D effect but didn’t play well, while some games played well but didn’t use the 3D effect. Again, these are games not on the compatibility list of the Samsung Odyssey 3D G90XF.

I did try a few of the games on the list above, and they worked brilliantly, though not all of them would show up in the Reality Hub software. I could launch them from Steam and the option to turn on the 3D effect showed up, but they weren’t in Reality Hub. This is also something Samsung and game makers are working on, there are still a few things to iron out.

I was also able to get the 3D effect to work in most YouTube videos as well as movies on Netflix. It’s just a matter of testing everything out where you want to test it out. In the current state of the monitor and software, some things will work and some won’t. This is simply the reality of something so new. I’m sure there will be reviewers out there that refuse to accept that and call out the issues with vigor. But this is a new experience and I believe it has potential and look forward to it.

Compatibility and game selection aside, when the 3D system works, it works well. Playing games in 3D without glasses is mind-blowing. Watching movies and YouTube in 3D is equally crazy cool. I admit, there are still some things Samsung needs to work out, as well as the game makers. But I think the tech is innovative and crazy cool, and I’m willing to give some grace and allow Samsung to continue to work and improve it.

Overall, yes, the software and experience have some work that needs to be done yet. But, even in its current state, I think the Odyssey 3D G90XF is a crazy amazing monitor that some users are going to want to experience first. Even if it means being an early adopter and dealing with a few quirks.

Sound

The Odyssey 3D G90XF houses built-in dual spatial audio speakers, providing directional sound for a pretty solid immersive experience. An excellent set of desktop speakers or a pair of great gaming headphones will probably be a bit better, but these speakers are above average. For a monitor.

I can tell they are certainly more immersive than other monitor offerings from Samsung. The bottom end is still a bit thinner than I would like, and the mids could use a boost. But, at some point, you have to realize this is a monitor and getting things tuned acoustically has to be a challenge. Though, I suppose if some laptops can manage to sound really amazing, then monitors should be able to improve as well.

Overall, the sound reproduction on the Odyssey 3D G90XF is excellent, for it being a monitor. I believe that buyers of this monitor will be using desktop speakers or headphones, but it’s nice to have more than capable sound capabilities in a monitor of this size.

Price/Value

The Odyssey 3D G90XF is not a cheap monitor, and you will be paying for that 3D experience. But I do think the value is here, for those who want this 3D experience and are early adopters. For those of you who are in the early adopter buying market, you know how this goes. Early adopters are, essentially, beta testers, and thank God for you. Early adopters are the ones who help improve products, and I think those buyers will find value here.

Wrap Up

The Samsung Odyssey 3D G90XF is, I believe, is a niche product, but there is certainly a market there; otherwise Samsung wouldn’t have made it. I think early adopters who love new tech will buy this. It’s for this reason, we’ve awarded this monitor with our first-ever Techaeris Innovation Award.
