SaskTel waiving some fees for those impacted by Saskatchewan wildfires

SaskTel has announced several measures to help support people who have been evacuated due to the ongoing wildfires in northern Saskatchewan.

According to a press release, the Government of Saskatchewan is waiving overage fees for customers affected by the wildfires. Customers who are forced to leave their homes due to the ongoing wildfires will not be charged for any television, internet, or home phone services.

SaskTel is also automatically waiving all data overage charges for customers living in affected areas from May 31 until June 16. The company will also credit customers for SaskTel Internet, maxTV Stream, and Home Phone services during the evacuation period.

The affected areas include Birch Portage First Nation, Brabant Lake, Canoe Lake, Creighton, Denare Beach, Deschambault Lake, East Trout Lake, Jan Lake, Little Bear Lake, Lower Fishing Lake, Morin Lake #217, Pelican Narrows, Piprell Lake, Sandy Bay, Southend, Sturgeon Weir, Weyakwin, and Whelan Bay.

Evacuation notices went out to the communities of La Ronge, Air Ronge, and Lac la Ronge Indian Band at around 4:30 p.m. yesterday. According to CTV News, the list of active evacuations for this year’s fire season has now reached 36.

Northern Saskatchewan is currently suffering from the largest wildfire the province has seen in decades. This includes the 300,000-hectare Shoe Fire, Pisew Fire, and Wolf Fire, with more fires affecting other provinces and cities, such as Manitoba’s Flin Flon, which has been practically deserted due to threatening wildfires.
