Tesla has confirmed that it has begun testing its autonomous ride-hail service in the Bay Area and Austin ahead of a wider launch that is set to take place this summer.
However, not everyone will be able to take it for a spin.
“FSD Supervised ride-hailing service is live for an early set of employees in Austin & San Francisco Bay Area,” the company said via a post on the X social network. That means that you’ll need to work for Tesla to get involved, something that other self-driving car companies have done in the past, TechCrunch notes.
Ferrying employees before a launch is standard procedure in the world of autonomous ride-hail. For example, Waymo uses a similar playbook when it enters a new market. In the lead up to a commercial launch and after weeks of driverless testing, Waymo will open its service to employees before inviting certain members of the public.
Tesla plans to launch its budding robotaxi service in Austin in June, with CEO Elon Musk saying that he expects that between 10 and 20 vehicles will be online initially.

Tesla has shared a promo video that appears to show a Model 3 being used for the new autonomous testing, with a screen in the rear displaying information about the journey. An emergency stop button will also be available, while controls for music and climate were also shown.
