The Veteran In Blockchain Technologies

Andreas Antonopoulos is a well-known author, podcaster, and Bitcoin advocate who has been actively working as an educator of Bitcoin and open blockchain technologies. Antonopoulos is an expert in making complex subjects in blockchain technology simpler and easier to understand, and he is doing it by highlighting all the possible positive and negative impacts these technologies have on our society and world. He is the host of the ‘Speaking of Bitcoin Podcast’, which was formerly known as ‘Let’s Talk Bitcoin’, and he worked as a professor at the M.Sc. Digital Currencies at the University of Nicosia.  

Early Life and Education 

Andreas Antonopoulos was born in 1972 in London and forced to move to Athens during the Greek junta, the right-wing military junta ruling between 1967 to 1974. Antonopoulos spent his childhood in Greece and later returned to the United Kingdom at the age of 17. He pursued his degrees from University College London in Computer Science and Data Communications, Networks, and Distributed Systems. 

Career

His career started at Nemertes Research, and Antonopoulos was its Senior Vice President and a founding partner from 2003 to 2011. At Nemertes Research, he volunteered for more research and conducted multiple studies on computer security. His career is more than just a personnel at Nemertes Research, he is a best-selling author, public speaker, expert in cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology, and educator. Andreas was a teaching assistant in the free Introduction to Digital Currencies courses offered by the University of Nicosia, and he managed to co-author the course curriculum.   

Andreas Antonopoulos’s Career as a Writer

He has a celebrated career as a writer, apart from designing a curriculum at the University of Nicosia, he wrote two best-selling books exclusively aimed at programmers. He wrote Mastering Bitcoin: Unlocking Digital Currencies in 2014, and its second edition, Mastering Bitcoin 2nd Edition: Programming the Open Blockchain in 2018.

Mastering Ethereum: Building Smart Contracts and dApps was his third book, written in 2018. The Internet of Money series of books was another best-selling work by Andreas. He wrote The Internet of Money Volume 1, The Internet of Money Volume 2, and The Internet of Money Volume 3 in 2016, 2017, and 2019, respectively.

Andreas Antonopoulos and His Involvement with Bitcoin

Andreas started his Bitcoin journey after 2011; till then, he was not interested in digital assets and the whole sector and believed they were ‘nerd money’. He started to embrace Bitcoin after he read Satoshi Nakamoto’s Bitcoin whitepaper, which was received on his mailing list chat. After reading the whitepaper, Andreas realized that digital money has a future and could be the future of money, and he soon became obsessed with these digital currencies and entered into Bitcoin and blockchain technology. 

After a year, he fell in love with Bitcoin and abandoned his freelance consultant job to invest his total attention and time in Bitcoin to explore its possibilities. Once he entered Bitcoin and blockchain technology, he started speaking at cryptocurrency conferences, writing articles to promote its adoption, consulting startups, etc. As per the information taken from his own ‘Speaking of Bitcoin Podcast’, Andreas is the consultant for most of the startups related to Bitcoin.

2014 was a notable year in Antonopoulos’s career. In January, he joined Blockchain.info as Chief Security Officer (CSO), and he stepped down from the role after eight months. Antonopoulos organized a fundraising campaign for Dorian Nakamoto in April, and the campaign managed to raise 50 BTC worth $23,000. His association with the Banking, Trade and Commerce committee of the Senate of Canada to discuss the ways to regulate bitcoin in Canada was one of the major initiatives he had taken in his journey. 

The industry experience and his strong inclination towards Bitcoin have positioned him as one of the leading crypto experts in the world. He has been invited and interviewed by the BBC, Financial Times, CNBC, CBS, NBC, and Bloomberg to share his views and ideologies with the next generation. At the moment, Andreas is working on his sixth book, which is titled Mastering the Lightning Network.
